Malaysian Palm Oil Products Do Well At Gulfood 2008

DUBAI, Feb 28 (Bernama) — MM Vitiaoils Sdn Bhd, a manufacturer of palm oil-based products, has closed several deals worth some US$1 million at the Gulfood 2008 exhibition here.

Its assistant trading manager, Mohamad Munir Jawead, said the buyers include those from the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

“We’re here not only to expand our Middle East market but African and European markets as well,” he told Bernama.

MM Vitaoils currently produces and exports more than 20 brands of quality edible oil products to around 60 countries. The products include cooking oil, vegetable ghee, shortening and margarine.

Mohamad Munir said the company’s biggest market is Europe which accounts for 30 percent of sales, followed by Africa and Asia (25 percent each), Russia (15 percent), Middle East (four percent) and Australia (one percent).

MM Vitaoils‘ plant in Shah Alam has a total monthly combined capacity of 12,000 metric tonnes.

Not to be outdone, Alami Vegetable Oil Products Sdn Bhd has also closed deals to the tune of US$1.1 million at Gulfood, touted as Middle East’s largest foodstuff, beverages and equipment show.

Its international marketing manager, Shafiq Ahmed, said the customers are from countries like Yemen and Kuwait as well as several African countries.

He told Bernama that the company was unable to book a booth in time as Gulfood 2008 was booked solid by September last year.

But the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) was gracious enough to share its stand at the Malaysian pavilion with Alami, whose factory is located in Kuala Langat, Selangor. Shafiq said Alami is expected to open a factory in Saudi Arabia by 2009 to meet growing demand for its products such as cooking oil, vegetable ghee and various specialty fats.

Meanwhile, the MPOC booth attracted a steady stream of visitors who were keen to find out more about Malaysian palm oil during the four-day Gulfood show which ended yesterday.

And the aroma of foodstuff prepared using Made-in-Malaysia cooking oil made from palm oil during cooking demonstrations organised at the booth proved too hard to resist as well.

People were seen dropping by to taste the samples, invariably giving nods of approval before shuffling away.

The presence of more than 40 Malaysian companies at Gulfood was arranged by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) which has an office in Dubai.
