MALAYSIA: Malaysia expects to increase the national average yield of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by up to 25 tonnes (27.5 tons) per year with the application of new technologies, Malaysian Palm Oil Board’s (MPOB) Chairman Datuk Sabri Ahmad told Malaysian national news agency Bernama at the International Palm Oil Congress on Aug 29.

A combination of the use of new seedlings such as MPOB’s PS1, Golden Hope’s GH500 and the planting of oil palm in more suitable environments will help Malaysia achieve the target and make it competitive in the global market.

A 3.8 percent hike in FFB yield to 19.6 tonnes (21.5 tons) per hectare contributed to a 3.4 percent year-on-year increase in oil yield to 3.9 tonnes (4.3 tons) last year. MPOB is aiming to raise the national average of FFB yield by an additional tonne to 20.6 tonnes (22.6 tons) per hectare from this year, he said.

MPOB has launched 350 technologies and products as of last year, and out of these, 34 percent of them have been commercialized.
