NGOs should use palm oil to drive conservation

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Environmentalists view the expansion of oil palm plantations in southeast Asia as one of the greatest threats to the region’s forests and biodiversity. Campaigners say oil palm is driving the conversion of tens of thousands of hectares of peatlands and lowland forest in Indonesia and Malaysia, putting wildlife at risk, increasing the vulnerability of the forests to fires, and triggering large emissions of greenhouse gases. Pressure from these groups have in recent months convinced European policymakers to reconsider sourcing energy crop production to the region.

Palm oil producers are fighting back, accusing the West of hypocrisy for criticizing their production while overlooking environmental harm caused by biofuel production in other parts of the world, including Amazonia (soy biodiesel and sugar cane ethanol), Europe (rapeseed), and the United States (corn ethanol).

Now a new paper calls for a truce, proposing that conservationists…

Biofuels Must Be Made Sustainably, Says European Commission

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

European Commission is developing legislation that will require minimum sustainability standards for biofuels development, European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said at the recent International Biofuels Conference in Brussels, Belgium, on July 5”“6. As part of its ongoing energy strategy, the European Union (EU) has agreed on an action plan to have biofuels comprise at least 10 percent of the region’s transport fuel use by 2020. “It is, of course, essential to ensure that this increase is fulfilled in a sustainable way; we cannot just sit back and assume this will happen automatically,” Piebalgs said.

Current trends indicate that 60 percent of the increase in carbon dioxide emissions in the EU between 2005 and 2020 will come from transport, according to Piebalgs. Emphasizing that, “biofuels are not the panacea for all our energy problems,” he noted that the renewable fuels—primarily biodiesel and ethanol—can help tackle…

Greater Emphasis Needed To Boost Oil Palm Yields, Says Industry Player

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) — Policy makers and industry players should put more emphasis on increasing the national average yields of the two leading palm oil producersMalaysia and Indonesia — which have stagnated over the last two decades.

Malaysia, for example, has not really been replanting its oil palm (and this) has resulted in the fall in the yields,” United Plantation Bhd’s vice-chairman/executive director (corporate affairs), Carl Bek-Nielsen, told Bernama at the International Palm Oil Congress here Wednesday.

He said more replanting should be undertaken in Malaysia because over 50 percent of the trees were more than 15 years old and over 40 percent more than 20 years old.

“We should not have this situation actually (as it will lower the average yields). We should have an average age profile of at least between 11 and…

Prices Ease On Indon Plan To Increase Export Tax

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) — Crude palm oil (CPO) futures prices on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed lower Wednesday on Indonesia’s plans to raise its export tax on the commodity to ten percent in September, dealers said.

They said in addition to tax increase, lower soyaoil prices had also affected the CPO prices.

Indonesia, the world’s largest palm oil producer, said the export tax increase was to reduce overseas shipments and ensure adequate local supply.

A dealer said the poor performance of the global stock markets has also pulled the commodity prices down.

He said the market fundamentals were, however, still strong as prices were traded range-bound — between RM2,400 and RM2,450 level — on strong festive demand.

At the close, the CPO futures for Sept ‘07 slipped RM27 to RM2,463 per tonne, Oct ‘07 decreased RM39 to RM2,406, Nov ‘07 fell RM34 to…

Palm Oil Yield to Expand By Up To 25 Tonnes With New Technologies

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Ahmad Farizal Abdul Hajat

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) — The average yield of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) is expected to increase by up to 25 tonnes per hectare per year with the application of new technologies, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), said today.

Its chairman, Datuk Sabri Ahmad, said this could be realised by using good planting materials such as PS1 seedlings from MPOB, GH500 seedlings from Golden Hope and other planting materials.

“These new seedlings, coupled with a good agronomic practices — such as oil palm being planted only in suitable areas, would help Malaysia achieve the target and make it competitive in the global market,” he said.

“By applying all these, it will ensure that the national avarage can effectively increase to 25 tonnes per hectare,” he told Bernama on the sidelines of the International Palm Oil Congress…

Palm oil mills dumping waste, minister promises action

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By RUBEN SARIO

KOTA KINABALU: Some palm oil mill operators are allegedly dumping waste into Sabah rivers, prompting a pledge from a state minister to personally track down these “recalcitrants.”

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjum said he intended to carry out surprise spot checks on such mills around the state.

“These checks would give me a better picture of what the actual situation is on the ground,” he said Wednesday after a two-day trip to the east coast Kinabatangan district.

He said he came across a palm oil mill there discharging effluent into the tributary of the nation’s second longest waterway.

“The water in the river stank. You don’t need to be scientist to know that there was something wrong there,” Masidi said.

He added that he had told the mill operator to “clean up his act” in…

Palm Oil Prices to Track Crude Oil Prices

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Mahanum Abdul Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) — Palm oil prices are likely to continue to track and move closely with international crude petroleum prices in the future.

Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) chief executive officer Tan Sri Dr Yusof Basiron said palm oil prices would able to touch RM3,500 per tonne level if the crude oil prices hit US$100 per barrel in the future.

However, he said palm oil prices might not trade higher than crude oil prices as demand for the commodity might come down due to higher prices.

“Knowing that petroleum is a diminishing resource, its prices will likely remain high, and by association, palm oil prices will similarly be remuneratively high in the future,” he told Bernama at the ongoing International Palm Oil Congress 2007 (PIPOC 2007).

He said the price level of over RM2,000 per tonne for palm…

Palm Oil Use Increases in U.S. Food Industry

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) — The trans fatty acids (trans fats or TFA) issue in the U.S. has prompted a significant increase in palm oil use by the food industry in that country, a top official of the Institute of Shortening and Edible Oils (ISEO) in Washington said today.

ISEO president Robert M. Reeves said the import of palm oil and its fractions into the U.S. more than doubled in the three-year period to 2006, with about 90 percent of it used in foods.

Trans fats have received global attention after the studies indicated that diets relatively high in trans fats raise low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol which is a risk factor for coronary heart disease,” he said at the Product Development and Nutrition Conference held in conjunction with the International Palm Oil Congress (PIPOC 2007)

Malaysia aims for higher palm yield

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

MALAYSIA: Malaysia expects to increase the national average yield of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by up to 25 tonnes (27.5 tons) per year with the application of new technologies, Malaysian Palm Oil Board’s (MPOB) Chairman Datuk Sabri Ahmad told Malaysian national news agency Bernama at the International Palm Oil Congress on Aug 29.

A combination of the use of new seedlings such as MPOB’s PS1, Golden Hope’s GH500 and the planting of oil palm in more suitable environments will help Malaysia achieve the target and make it competitive in the global market.

A 3.8 percent hike in FFB yield to 19.6 tonnes (21.5 tons) per hectare contributed to a 3.4 percent year-on-year increase in oil yield to 3.9 tonnes (4.3 tons) last year. MPOB is aiming to raise the national average of FFB yield by an additional tonne to 20.6…
